Been a while, been busy. Boarded first ever live action board (samples below) for a short directed by Ciaran Foy, filming starts in January, lookin forward to seeing how it all works. We finished a fifteen minute cut down episode (from twenty minutes), a trailer, and a 1 minute intro for a television series pitch in-house, ....and we had a time boarding an up and coming kids straight to dvd feature, not as excitin but it was fun to work on, and that was all since August. And we just started a brand new t.v. show for Disney. Recession me arse! .....Although still broke!

Peter Falk

Sad news on Friday hearing of the passing of Peter Falk, easily my favourite t.v. actor. The image above was from a pitch I tried to push in here a few years ago called Kid Columbo. In short the apple didn't fall far from the tree and the detective's grandchild had inherited Columbo's detection skills.

Below is part one of a video from the Dick Cavett show a fair few years ago. Falk, Cassavettes and Gazzara wind the host up into a frenzy, refusing to play along and just simply answer the host's questions. Although if you stick around until the very end of the three clips all three characters reveal some really insightful and inspiring words about their craft and their lives.

This clip below is from Dean Martin's old celebrity roast show with Falk's Columbo roasting Frank Sinatra.

I'm not that crazy about tributes to people I don't know personally, I'm finding the facebook thing pretty annoying. Every couple of months everyone has some form of an RIP status on thir walls. I am however gonna use this blog for once and indulge in a little hero worship.

From my armchair, Falk's Columbo character has never been bettered. You can take the Murder She Wrote shows, Magnum, The Rockford Files, Ironside or any of them, they never matched the class and the acting chops displayed by Falk and the immense talents he attracted to play the villains. Jack Cassidy, Vera Miles(in the itchy hand episode), Ray Milland, Roddy McDowell, John Cassavettes, Patrick McGoohan, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, Faye Dunaway... and the list goes on.

I don't mean to belittle shows like Murder She Wrote (also penned by the creators of Columbo; Link and Levinson). Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher is recognised as one of the best television detectives there has been. I always thought though that she was fighting valiantly to get through scripts with incredibly ludicrous plot twists, unrevealed family histories or relationships, that would unravel in the last two minutes of each show. She always seemed to be supported in her efforts by a hodge podge cast of z list soap actors and actresses, who seemed more interested in looking their parts than acting them out. To me the shows felt more like watching the lottery (if you were trying to solve the murder yourself) than the whodunnits they claimed to be.

Columbo was all about acting. You knew who the murderer was straight off the bat, you knew why the victim has been killed, yet you were glued to your seat as Falk broke the suspects down bit by bit over and hour and a half. I think with a lot of detective shows, when the villain was caught you're almost spitting at the screen and pumping your fist into the air with the joy that there's one less murderer out there in t.v. land to worry about. What stood Columbo apart from these other shows was that the murderers were portrayed sympathetically. There are only one or two shows that I can think of off the top of my head in which the murderer was dragged away kicking, screaming or shouting. I'd nearly go as far as saying that the Columbo character nearly regretted the final showdown with his suspects, as over the course of his cases he would get to know and respect many of them, where on another show the protagonist would be revelling in revealing a string of nonsense that the viewer wasn't privvy to before the finger was finally pointed, and you nearly felt the other suspects all wanted an opportunity to kick the villain in the arse, because during the course of any investigation all their dirty laundry ended up hanging out for all to see.

That's my two cents worth, for what it's worth. I've spent plenty of Sunday afternoons sitting in front of the box loving every minute of any given Columbo episode. This might sound like an odd thing to say, about a show that thrived on murder, but it was relaxing, funny, easy going, and intelligent television and it was all down to Falk.

I was prickin around with this a while ago, and touched it up a small bit tonight. It's from a photograph I took in San Francisco last year. Blah... I could probably have done a lot better. I think I pull these off better when there's a dominant colour involved. There were maybe too many bits and pieces in this rather than a specific focal point so it got a bit messy.

Found another great pic with really cool composition. I tried to copy the shapes of the guards when I started but in the end it would have been too too painstaking for an evening practice, so I just added a couple of highlights here and there and hopefully got away with it. It's gettin slightly easier to use the wacom. Slowly, slowly and fingers crossed eventually! The colors are starting to look more natural than the previous couple which has been the objective with these, getting myself away from the brighter cartoon type palette I'm used to at work.

Took a break from the sketchers this Sunday to have another digital 'paint in'. I guess I'm learning backwards here. I never mastered the wacom tablets, it'd always been pencil or f*** off with me until the cintiq came along. I'd say this took me the bulk of three or so hours, probably would've taken half that time with the cintiq, but it's a bit of fun. I found a pic online of the new Dublin Airport Terminal Two building that had really great colour and I tried my best to emulate them. Don't bother blowing it up to fullscreen it's a mass of mistakes.

sunday night itouch pic (back to the sketchbook app - brushes pixelates when you zoom in, makes it a pain in the arse). i came across a photo, a downshot of an umbrella in the rain with just the feet underneath, and kind of combined that with a memory of a pic nathan fowkes did for a project of aa dude steppin off a plane at some for of alien testing facility. Anyways it's not as good as either of the two reference pieces, but I'm improvin slowly with the new technology. takin a break from it for a while now, plenty of work to do. I started this at around nine thirty and it's almost 3 in the mornin now, shite! I dumped the video pic from friday and the the pic of the dude and the umbrella from a couple of weeks ago, look shite now.

Dinnertime doodling. I was listening to a Jimmy Stewart series of old radio plays durin the day while workin and hunted up a pic of Donna Reed to test the 'brushes' app on the itouch. I think I prefer the sketchbook app. Just a couple of niggly things, but the main one would be that there doesn't seem to be a way to scale up or down a layer/image (did a google trawl and went through the help menu). Like it's just a quick sketch, but when you zoom in and shit and you get lost in a detail, like an eye, and you go a bit bigger than the sketch underneath, it'd be handy to scale up and down a bit. I could have fit all her hair in then. Maybe they'll have this feature for the ipad version, but an ipad ain't on my shoppin list, cintiq and itouch is plenty. Great brushes on the app though. Anyway back to work.

-i adjusted the forehead as per JG O Donoghue's comment to make it less of a feature. Hope it works better. I don't know how to select and scale, but I think it makes the brow a bit less imposing hopefully. Cheers for the comments as always.

My sister got me the coolest birthday present, these goggles. They're bigger than the ones I had been using but now I get to see the used plasters and dirt at the bottom of the pool in widescreen. These will drive the women down in the sportsclub crrrrrraaaaaaaaaazyyy! I just know it! Anyhoo something different to distract from the bad art on the site! Oh and cheers to Garrett O Donoghue for puttin the pic below up on facebook. He still has hair, I've none. He's pickin his nose, I'm the sexbomb on the left. Centre of the pic is Maria Wessel (pronounced vessel). Ah hair, how I miss thee. I still remember the Vidal sassoon smell in the mornings after a shower. Now for some reason I smell like rubber! The pic was taken by some inhouse studio stalker in Filmkameratene in Oslo circa 1997 I think.

And one final pic I had in a drawer here, taken by the incomparable Chris Scully during a second stint in Oslo circa 2000. I should probably have realised the only solution was to shave it off at this stage! Ha ha. There you go, you turn 35 and the retrospection begins. I guess it's all downhill from hereon in! I'll tell you what though when I think back I was a real nob, it's only recently I've become uber-cool! Ha ha!! Oh and just to clarify none of the art behind me at this desk below is mine, I didn't work on the Iron Giant and the black and white image was a location design by the uber-talented Svein something or other, can't remember his surname. I did do the space caravan stuff behind the lightdesk for something or other. And the photo of the guy rowin the boat above the desk is my Ol' lad when he visited for a weekend and we travelled up to the Arctic circle to Moskenes (Google Earth it!) for a weekend and drank ourselves into oblivion! Yeah I was 26 then and he wouldn't let me row the boat! Ah I guess I was very weedy back then. Oh and we stayed in a cottage when we were there next door to the Kuntze family! Ha ha! Childish I know!

I'm boardin in photoshop at the moment and after work today had a prick around with some of the pencil brushes I downloaded from the internet. Don't blow it up, canvas is a bit too big, it's really messy, and I only spent an hour on it so it's as short on detail as it could be. Probably looks better if you just squint at it!

Watched that James Stewart Tonight show clip again and did a few sketches.

Any audiobook/ radio play enthusiasts I bought the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo on itunes for 50 cent! (It's 50 something hours long!!!!!!!) Since reading the book, think it's thirteen or so years ago now, I haven't come across anything else that's come close to the pure page-turnability of it. I started listening to it on Friday and finished it last night. I'd recommend it to anyone.

On a side note this dude, Edward Ernest, left a comment on one of my recent posts. Really outstanding work.

This chick is ex-Stardust and now Dreamworks model artist extraordinaire Nadja Bonacina, whose birthday I missed on the facebook yoke, something I don't check often enough, though I don't have 'get into facebooking' at the top of my list of things to do! Strange caricature in fairness, when I was back in Berlin, 10 years ago now, caricatures of everyone were floatin' around the studio, and when I sat down to do this one 'The Swiss' hadn't really aged?!?!?!? Well for some! Ha ha!

The dude in the shades is the uber-talented Matt 'Tooninator' Boismier, who leaves comment after comment on the blog here, something I should be more dilligent about myself. Side note on this dude, his current facebook profile pic has him standing shoulder to shoulder with Glen Keane!

Above is some completely random fan-art inspired by District Nine. When you've seen it you'll know where I'm comin from, they're not good-lookin creatures at all. This is my version of a half-human half alien woman! (prawns as they're referred to in the movie! ...hence the giant prawn on her head...) Sorry if you enlarged it, it looks a lot better in a smaller format. It started out as a sketch of Mel B from the daily rag and ended up like this somehow!

I was prickin around with it durin the week on the cintiq and I'm not goin any further with it. the digital work is a lot lot darker than what's posted, I had to prick around with the balance levels, should have started with a ref pic, still the sketch was so rough I couldn't make out half of what I'd drawn, probably wouldn't have made any difference.

I've really let this blog go over the summer, have to try to get back into it. I'm workin on a comicy thing in my own time, continuing on from the ruffs posted a coupl of weeks ago, and rather than just plough into it and start drawing I thought I'd just spend a month or so gettin character designs together that I'm comfortable drawing. Something not too complicated like, with simple shapes. Anyway, this would be the closest I've come to the female lead character. I had Marnie playing the other day and found the anti-heroine Lil (Diane Baker) a good study. There's one line in the original novel that sets her up as a sexual tease; temptress; provocateur type, and even though it's only a line that is discarded and laughed off fairly quickly, by the two lead characters, there's probably something to it, and there should probably be a touch of sauce about her. Anyway, there you go. I have loads more, mostly on post-its, I'll post them whenever they're presentable. Right now like everything else it's all a mess! Really ruff and messy cintiq freehand distraction. When I get the other few pages done I'll go over'em properly and ink them properly. I decided that since I don't really have a great imagination for ideas and such, that to keep me going after work ends durin the day I'd do a few comic pages based on sequences I really like out of books I've read. I have a few more scenes after this one, it's an opening sequence this one. Anyways apologies for the unreadability of it. It's my first time drawin freehand in photoshop, I wanted to give it a whirl, only thing is I love sketchbook pro. Great for sketching.

-edit- the weird one on top of the skeletal volleyball player was sketched at the Bodies exhibition, currently in Dublin. The figure has been plasticised and the shoulder blades and muscles were pulled out. In case people thought I was entering a psychotic phase!

I received an email from a Stardust co-worker, Steffen Harder, on the passing of Thilo Rex, our old Potsdam boss. I thought I'd post it on the off chance that any of my ex Stardust colleagues visit the blog. He was a good man and will be missed, dying at the young age of 51. He was found in his apartment following two days' unanswered phonecalls. I didn't know him as well as the rest of the crew that stayed on during the financial difficulties the studio was going through at the time, but I will say that my memories of the time there have entertained buddies and colleagues in pubs, bars or wherever I've ended up since. He was one of the great characters I've come across in the industry since I began my career.

Dentist visit on Friday. I started route canal back in October, and I was meant to go back in December but I forgot entirely about it. So Monday, chewing gum, temporary filling comes out, legend! Bell rings in the head. So back to it on Friday. I did this up as a gift so maybe she'll go a little easier... fingers crossed! Ah no great dentist, never thought I'd have the guts to go back last year after the last guy cause he was an absolute butcher!

Started this this afternoon for my other niece Sophie. It's fun painting with oil on canvas board beats the wacom. Still a long way to go though. I'll let it dry a tad over might before I go in and refine it a bit tomorrow sometime. Laters......
